Running
Jump Records is a free netlabel releasing music made exclusively with
the PSP. Currently, there are 4 programs produced for the system
capable of allowing the user create music on the Sony handheld:
PSPRhythm
- Sample-based 'groovebox' styled step sequencer capable of loading
large samples. Also includes several effects sends such as delay and
distortion. One track is dedicated to TB303-esque
synthesizer. Currently, the most popular homebrew music
application for PSP. Freeware.
PSPSeq-
Synthesis-based high resolution step sequencer with multiple
synthesizer types and effects that can generate a wide variety of
sounds; from glitchy lo-tech to traditional virtual analog and other
more experimental soundscapes. Also includes wav-playing
abilities.
Each step of a loop is capable of storing complete instrument,
effect and envelope changes allowing for complex
arrangement. Freeware.
PSPKick
- Multitrack sample playback step sequencer. Originally intended as
a drum machine but has transcended into full music making application.
Freeware.
TraxxPad
- Commercial sample sequencer with unique interface. Allows
in-program sampling and sample editing adjustments, realtime recording
ala modern 'grooveboxes' such as the MPC500 and comes with professional
loops and one-shots. Commercial.
We are currently acception submissions for music to be released. Here are the submission guidelines:
- Multi-track EP's and LP's are preferred,
however single tracks will be accepted for 'white label' releases now
and then. White label releases will be title-less EPs featuring
music from various contributors. An EP should be 2 or more tracks
and range between 5 and 20 minutes. More tracks and/or longer
recordings will constitute an LP. There are no requirements or
limits for time for white-label 'loose' tracks submitted.
- Releases will be available in both streaming formats (i.e. MP3/OGG) and source file format for your chosen program. If you do not wish to release the source from your music do not bother submitting music.
In the future there may be a streamed-only set of releases but
it's highly unlikely. Source files include any samples not stored
in the song-file itself. Please include any specific instructions
for playback on a PSP if required.
- You
must provide front and back sleeve art for your release. Running
Jump Records can provide you with our imprint logo and the catalog
number of your forthcoming release if you wish to integrate it into your cover
art. Cover art must include artist name, EP/LP name and track
listings as well as any copyright info you wish to include. If
the Running Jump Records imprint is not included with your cover art
when submitted, we will add it ourselves inconspicuously on the bottom
left corner of the back sleeve in a color fitting the of the sleeve
art, along with the catalog number below it. All cover art must be 800 x 800 pixels square in PNG format.
- You
may include a separate text file bundled with the release containing
any shout outs, information on running the PSP source file, complaints
about these requirements, hate-mongering, etc. with the release. It's your soapbox to say whatever you want.
- Streamed
audio must be rendered by the original artist (i.e. YOU) and may
contain minimal mastering to beef up the presence of the track.
For example a multiband compressor and limiter. Do not use non-mastering effects per track or complete render such as reverbs, delays, distortions, etc.
The actual effects must come from the PSP alone. You may
not use mastering effects per-track either. Simply render the
entire song, then apply the mastering. Allowed tools are:
EQ (however many bands you wish to use), compressor and limiter.
- Commercial samples are allowed if you wish to use them. However, they are your responsibility.
In our eyes, we are not selling any music, therefore are not
making money off other people's work. However, if your release is
flagged by a commercial record company, it will be removed. In
other words, include those kinds of samples at your own risk.
- We
accept any style of music, so long as it is completely PSP-made and can
be played back live on a single program within PSP. In other words, no multi-PSP musics.
- Have fun.
The whole purpose of this make-shift netlabel is to provide a
gathering point for people making music on Sony's handheld.
There's tons of places like this for people rocking out with
their Gameboys...why should the PSP rockers be left out in the cold to
fend on their own?
For further inquiries or to submit music, please email Running Jump Recs. We hope to hear from you..
